How to Design Business Cards That People Actually Keep

By 53Printers Team — Cypress, TX

Most business cards get glanced at once and then forgotten in a pocket or drawer. The ones that stick around share a few traits — and none of them require a big budget.

Start With the Essentials Only

Resist the urge to cram everything onto your card. Name, title, phone, email, and website. That's it for most businesses. If you have a physical location people visit, add your address. Instagram handle only if your business is visually driven (restaurant, salon, photographer).

A card with too much information looks desperate. White space is professional.

Paper Stock Makes the First Impression

When someone takes your card, they feel it before they read it. Standard 14pt feels flimsy. Our 16pt cardstock has a solid, premium feel that signals quality before they've read a word. Add a matte or soft-touch laminate and it becomes genuinely memorable.

For certain industries — real estate, finance, law — consider 18pt with spot UV on your logo. The contrast between matte paper and gloss logo is striking.

Color: Less Is More

Two colors plus black/white is the maximum for most cards. More than that and it looks like a circus flyer.

Your brand color on the back (full bleed), white logo and contact info on the front against navy or dark background — this is the formula that works for almost every industry in Houston.

Typography Rules

  • Minimum 8pt for any text that needs to be readable
  • Name: 11–14pt, your brand font, bold
  • Contact info: 8–9pt, clean sans-serif
  • Never use more than 2 fonts on a business card
  • File Setup for Best Results

    Submit a PDF with:

  • **Bleed:** 0.125 inches on all sides
  • **Resolution:** 300 DPI minimum
  • **Color mode:** CMYK (not RGB)
  • **Fonts:** embedded or outlined
  • If you're not sure how to set this up, we offer design services starting at $49 — and we'll make sure your file is perfect before it goes to print.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many business cards should I order?

For most professionals, 250 is a good starting point. At 500+ the per-card price drops significantly. If you're attending events regularly, order 500.

Can I get business cards same week in Cypress TX?

Yes. Standard turnaround at 53Printers is 3–5 business days. Rush 1–2 day turnaround is available on most stocks.

What's the difference between gloss and matte finish?

Gloss is shiny and makes colors pop — great for photography or colorful brands. Matte is flat/smooth and feels more premium — better for professional services, finance, legal.
